William Smith NCAA Championship Field Hockey On WHWS 105.7fm


 William Smith College will host SUNY New Paltz in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. The Herons and Hawks will square off at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 on McCooey Field.  The game will be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
 



Ticket prices are $5 for general admission, $3 for students, senior citizens, and military personnel with a valid ID, and children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are admitted free of charge.

William Smith received one of six at-large bids into the 24-team tournament. The Herons posted a 15-4 overall record and finished second in the Liberty League regular season and tournament standings. It will be William Smith's third consecutive and 21st overall NCAA tournament appearance. The Herons are 32-17 in their previous 20 NCAA tournaments, winning the national championship in 1992, 1997, and 2000.

First team All-Liberty League senior forward Taylor Cappello leads the team with 14 goals, eight assists, and 36 points. Classmate Julia Simmons is second with 11 goals and 23 points. The all-conference trio of seniors Melanie O'Connor and Margaret McConnell and first-year Alessandra Patrizio are tied for third with 21 points apiece. First-year goalie Amy Feda has started 16 matches and boasts an 11-4 record, a 1.67 goals against average and a .716 save percentage.

William Smith is 10-0 at home this season and 42-8 on McCooey Field since the current seniors arrived on campus.

William Smith has played four teams in this year's tournament field, posting a 2-3 record. The Herons hold victories over Commonwealth Conference champion Messiah (4-3 in overtime) and Centennial Conference champion Ursinus (2-1). William Smith was on the short end of one-goal decisions against Liberty League champion Skidmore (3-2 and 4-3) and New Jersey Athletic Conference champion Montclair State (1-0). All three loses were on the road.

New Paltz earned an automatic bid into its second NCAA tournament field, defeating SUNY Cortland 5-4 (2 OT, 4-3 shootout). The Hawks are 13-8 overall, including a 7-4 mark away from their home turf. New Paltz lost to Bowdoin 6-1 in last year's first round in the program's only other NCAA appearance.

Danielle Conklin leads the team with 23 goals, 13 assists, and 59 points. Dani Ackerman is second in goals (18) and points (43). Senior goalie Antonija Pjetri has started 18 matches in goal, producing a 10-7 record, a 2.39 goals against average and a .732 save percentage.

New Paltz played two teams during the regular season that made this year's tournament field, Montclair State and Skidmore. The Hawks dropped a 3-1 decision at home to the Red Hawks and lost 5-4 to the Thoroughbreds, also in New Paltz, N.Y.
