Kunin '09 Goes From WEOS To GMA!!

Sarah Kunin '09, who has steadily been moving up the ranks at ABC News, was recently promoted to producer of food and lifestyle at Good Morning America (GMA). In the position, she is responsible for culinary and fashion segments in the second hour of the show.

"I look for unique ideas and stories and try to come up with innovative ways to present them to our viewers," explains Kunin. "Some days I'm working on a basic cooking demonstration with our food stylist, and other days I'm planning a game show about holiday gift ideas using our JumboTron or scouting women on the streets of New York and transforming them into models live on our show."

During her time at GMA, Kunin has covered everything, including a presidential election, a natural disaster, the royal wedding and a cooking segment with Sesame Street's Elmo and Cookie Monster.

"Some of my proudest moments are surviving the major breaking news crashes or beating the competition with details obtained exclusively overnight," explains Kunin. "Working at GMA has been the best graduate school I could have asked for. I've learned how to write scripts, shoot video, edit sequences, and feed material from the field."

Prior to becoming producer, Kunin served as a campaign digital reporter, responsible for following Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman from event to event, shooting his stump speeches, asking him questions, feeding material, and blogging about it for ABC News' website.

"I was essentially a one-man-band with a camera, laptop, iPad and two cell phones," confesses Kunin, who cut her eight-month political reporting career short when she was offered the position as producer. "It is one of the most unique jobs in this business, and also one of the most intense. I have an incredible amount of respect for all of the campaign embeds-it's one of the best, and hardest, jobs in this business."

As long as she can remember, Kunin has wanted to pursue a career in media, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges gave her the means to turn that dream into a reality.

"Until I attended HWS, I really had no clue how to break into the business," says Kunin. "I grew up in New York City and actually used to pass the ABC News headquarters every morning on my way to school. It still makes me laugh when I think about that fact that it took moving to Geneva, N.Y., to get me in the building."

Her path to ABC News began during the HWS Media day. The event, coordinated by the Salisbury Center Career Services and Professional Development, provided Kunin with the opportunity to meet and network with alums and parents in the media and communications fields in New York City, including John McConnell P'08, senior vice president of programming at ABC News Radio.

Through McConnell, she secured an unpaid summer internship. After graduation, she was hired as a news assistant at ABC News Radio and later positions as a production associate at GMA and an associate producer at ABC News before becoming a campaign digital reporter.

A double major in media and society and Spanish, Kunin participated in Jumpstart, Chorale and Cantori, and studied abroad in Madrid. On the Dean's List, she also served as the news and sports commentator for WEOS-FM for two years.

WHWS To Broadcast MLK Geneva Memorial Service

The Rev. Sherman Dunmore Sr., pastor of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church will be the featured speaker today at Geneva's annual Martin Luther King Jr. worship service.

The service will follow a march through downtown; that begins at 9:30 at the Public Safety Building on Exchange Street, the service is at the United Methodist Church. A fellowship dinner immediately follows the service.

The theme this year is “Monumental effort plus monumental sacrifice equals monumental dreams,” a reference to the recently dedicated Martin Luther King monument in Washington, D.C. In addition to Dunmore’s speech, the worship service will feature music by the MLK Memorial Choir and the announcement of the winners of the 2012 MLK Art and Poetry Contest.
The broadcast begins at 11am.

Van Halen Back With A Bang!

While an anxious world awaits word on the upcoming Van Halen tour, the band is reportedly doing a gig this week at a New York City venue that’s a far cry from the arenas the group usually plays.

The band has invited music writers and critics to attend a performance at 250-seater Club Wha? in Greenwich Village Thursday night. While nothing official was mentioned in the invite, The New York Times reports journalists “have been told the group will play a short set.”

Why Club Wha? Apparently the band has a connection to the venue via Diamond Dave. Rolling Stone reports Roth’s Uncle Manny used to manage the room decades ago and booked Jimi Hendrix, Bill Cosby and Richie Pryor back in the day.

Meanwhile, we’re only seven days away from Van Halen ticket madness. The band posted a video on its website last week proclaiming the first round of ticket sales for the upcoming tour would launch Jan. 10. Dates have yet to be released.

ZuZu Coming Back To Seneca Falls

It is an uplifting tale, reminding people they are surrounded by family who love them.

But when the cameras filming It’s A Wonderful Life stopped rolling, life wasn’t so wonderful for the child at its centre.

Karolyn Grimes, now 71, starred as six-year-old Zuzu in the 1946 movie that follows an angel who saves a father set on killing himself so his family can benefit from the life insurance.

Messiah Beats William Smith 1-0 in Soccer Semi-Final

SAN ANTONIO—The top-ranked Messiah College soccer team scored in the 70th minute to edge No. 2 William Smith 1-0 in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship semifinal played Friday at Blossom Soccer Stadium.

William Smith, who was making its third appearance in the national semifinals in the past four years, finished the season with a 20-1-1 overall record. The 2011 Herons set new William Smith records for wins in a season (20), shutouts in a season (19), and lowest goals against average (0.14). This year's team also tied the program record for fewest goals allowed (3).

Senior goalie Amanda Davis played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith this afternoon and finished with five saves. She finished her soccer career tied for first in Heron history with 61 career victories. Davis ranks second all-time with 44 career shutouts. She also sits atop the William Smith list with 20 wins in 2011, and is tied for third in program history with 14 shutouts this fall.

The 10 Heron seniors Chelsea England, Jessie Tarantino, Leslie Carrese, Sarah Tarantino, Alyse DiCenzo, Alexandra Frankel, Jamie Sawyer, Kate Redmond, Leah Shatkin and Davis have led the Herons to an impressive 68-9-12 record in their four years on the team.

The first half was a defensive battle, with a lot of the action taking place in the midfield. The Falcons (22-0-1) had the match's first real scoring chance with 16:00 left in the half. Corrine Wulf drilled a shot towards the goal that soared just high of the crossbar.

With 12:45 remaining in the opening half, the Herons had an opportunity of their own when they earned a corner kick. Junior Renee Jensen blasted the ball into the box. Jessie Tarantino redirected it with a header, but it went wide of the right post.

The Messiah offense had control of the ball for the final minutes before the break. The Falcons recorded three corner kicks in a span of three minutes, but every attempt was cleared away by the Heron defense. With 3:03 remaining, Erin Hench fired a shot from just inside the box, but Davis was there to come up with the save and preserve the scoreless tie through halftime.

The defensive battle continued in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Hench drilled a shot from just outside of the box and Davis came up with the huge diving save.

With 20:11 remaining Messiah broke though. Alex Brandt put a placed a shot just into the top right corner of the goal that deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net. Rachel Scheibeler set up the play.

William Smith continued to fight for the game-tying goal. With 16:13 left in regulation, Jessie Tarantino broke through the Falcon defense and fired a shot from right in front of the goal, but Falcon goalie, Autumn Reilly, dove on top of the ball before it could cross over the line and into the goal.

Messiah finished with a 12-1 advantage in shots and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks. Reilly finish made one save in goal for the Falcons.

Sue earned a bachelor’s degree in history from William Smith College in 1999 and completed the education program. After working as an assistant soccer coach for the William Smith Herons, Sue enrolled in a master’s program at Washington College, earning an advanced degree in history. Before rejoining HWS, Sue was a college soccer coach at both the NCAA Division I and III levels. As an Associate Director of Admissions, she oversees the campus tour and works with tour guides and senior interns. Sue also recruits students from the Hudson Valley as well as Westchester and Fairfield Counties.

Ted Baker is the voice of Hobart football and lacrosse. He is also the host of the Finger Lakes Morning News from 5:30-9am weekdays on WGVA 1240 AM and 96.1FM. Ted's been bonding with radio audiences for over 30 years. He's got his own take on the day's events, and he's not afraid to share it.

Decemberists Received Grammy Nod!!

The Decemberists have been nominated for two Grammys.

The lead singer and guitarist for the Portland band is Colin Meloy. He says he was sitting on his sofa at home, hanging out with his kids, when he got a text about the nominations.

His song, "Down By The Water," was nominated for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. He says he had to parse out what the difference might be between the song and the performance. But, he says it's awesome to be nominated -- and a little surprising.

"This is our first time being nominated and to be honest the bands that I loved growing up were never nominated. So I always had it in my mind that the Grammys were a different kind of music altogether. Almost speaking a different language."

Meloy says he liked bands like The Smiths and Husker Du when he was young.

Also nominated for the categories were: Coldplay, the Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Radiohead.

The awards will be given out Febuary 12th.

The song addresses the difficulties in dating someone in a touring band: distance, rumors and, of course, not knowing when they're going to be home with you again. Neon Hitch sings the hook that encourages her boyfriend to "get your ass back home.

Michael Monteiro '10 and Cabot Roy '11 have joined the team at OneWire.com, a company at work to revolutionize the inner-workings of financial recruitment.

Called "Wall Street's answer to Linked-in," the online service connects clients with potential employees from a community of more than 250,000 finance professions. Beneficial to both employers and job-seekers, OneWire matches candidates for positions based on specific qualifications and interests.

"I took a risk working at a start-up," explains Monteiro. "It seemed exciting and I wanted be a part of the whole Silicon Alley- dot com- movement happening in New York City."

As a sales manager, Monteiro is responsible for creating and maintaining new business relationships in the realm of finance consisting of investment banks, hedge funds, private equity and similar firms. Joining the OneWire team after graduation, Monteiro serves in a sales management role, currently managing accounts.

The following year, Cabot landed a competitive internship which led to his current position as Sales Associate.

"In retrospect, working at OneWire has turned out to be a great decision given the amount of experience I have been able to gain," says Monteiro. "I have also made important connections."

Current students can take advantage of OneWire by creating a profile online. Instantly, profiles can be matched to entry-level opportunities in finance.

While at HWS, Monteiro majored in public policy and minored in English. He studied abroad in Lingnan, was a member of Kappa Alpha, and was a recipient of the Charles H. Salisbury Endowed Internship Fund. He also had a show on WHWS and helped review new music!

Roy majored in history and had a double minor in philosophy, and law and society. He studied abroad in Maastricht, was a member of Kappa Alpha, and is currently a Gold volunteer for Alumni House.

Hobart Senior Justin Dotzman is now preparing for his final season as a member of the Hobart soccer team. The two-year team captain has recorded four goals and six assists for 14 points in 50 career games. In his time on the squad, Hobart has posted a 52-15-12 record, captured the Liberty League title in 2010, and made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Hobart Director of Athletics Mike Hanna '68 announced today that Mike Neer, the former University of Rochester head coach with 563 career victories to his credit, will end a one-year retirement to return to the hardwood as the head coach of the Statesmen. Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen recording group Gym Class Heroes have announced plans for a major North American tour. The dates see the alternative hip-hop superstars co-headlining alongside The Dirty Heads, beginning October 12th and running through November.

No hometown Geneva date was included in the schedule, BUT the road from Albany to Toronto passes thru Geneva, NY- so MAYBE!

GCH last played Geneva in October 2007 and the show was sold out at the Smith Opera House. Before the show Travie visited HWS and gave a short talk in the Geneva Room. He is old friends with Hobart Dean Chip Capraro.

WEOS-WHWS Alum Works On MIB3

Hobart alum Marlon Small's career has already started to take off in ways he never imagined. Recently, he was hired as a production assistant on the film, "Men in Black 3." In this role, he manages numerous behind-the-scenes logistics and organizes the actors' schedules through hair, makeup, wardrobes and on the set. He is also responsible for ensuring that random noises or lights do not interfere with the quality of the filming of the movie.

"All of my previous internships and work experiences have provided me with valuable opportunities, but I have never experienced anything like working for MIB3, a $300 million Will Smith production," says Small. "I have learned even more."

After graduation, Small landed two internships in the film industry. He worked with Grant Wilfley Casting, a major casting company on the east coast, and as a production intern on the film "Violet and Daisy," starring Alexis Bledel, Saoirse Ronan and James Gandolfini. Small also worked on a pilot for NBC/USA called "EDEN," as well as season four of "Damages."
"I received these internships through the help of a 2009 William Smith alum, so the connections I formed at HWS were crucial in pursuing my career," he explains.
Small's interest in the film industry leans more toward the creative side. With a passion for comedy, he hopes to become involved in writing, producing and development in the future.

"Working in production, I am able to read scripts before they are shot, so in a very ‘before and after' manner, I get to see what works and what doesn't, and why some things work and other things don't. It's been very helpful in my own writing," he says.

Small earned his B.A. in English and Media and Society. While a student, he was an employee at the Cellar Pub and also participated in intramural basketball. Marlon also worked at WEOS and WHWS!!

Wells '12 Published!

This summer, William Smith senior Lauren Wells had a poem published in Burner Magazine, a digital pop art magazine. The publication chose Wells' poem, "Mr. Barnard's Sanity Clinic for Fucked Up Individuals," for their Revolutionaries issue.

Wells, an English major with a concentration in creative writing and a minor in media and society, was inspired to submit her work to the magazine because she admires the way in which they combine the visual arts with the written word.

"I had seen a lot of their past issues and thought it was definitely the type of magazine I would like to write for," says Wells.
Wells explains the inspiration and story behind her poetry is derived from her experience in Assistant Professor of English Karl Parker's Advanced Poetry Workshop last semester.

"Professor Parker had us writing in our journals every day, so this came from his class and his inspirational work with us," she says.

On campus Wells writes for Thel, the Colleges' literary magazine and The Herald, while also working for WHWS-FM as a host for her own radio show. She is also involved in the music scene around campus and in the Geneva community, planning concert events and booking shows.
Wells spent her sophomore spring semester abroad in London pursuing her writing interests. She will spend next semester in Perth, Australia.

Musselman ARTS Triathlon Returns to the Smith Opera House

Saturday July 16, 2011 from 2:00 - 3:30pm: Music, Dance, and Art - CREATIVE FUSION! - all to benefit the Smith Opera House...it's the third annual Musselman Arts Triathlon!

The show will feature graduates from the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca Conservatory; contemporary dance companies from Rochester, NY; and performing arts-inspired painting!

Including performances by: Present Tense Dance Company, Biodance, Reina Apraez, Timmothy Baker, Kelly Covert, Donna Davenport, Mark Olivieri, and Greg Wachala.

The performance will begin with dance solos, followed by Present Dance Co. performing with violinist Timmothy Baker. Finally, the Biodance Co. will perform with Mark Olivieri's Jazz Ensemble. HWS's Reina Apraez will be creating a painting that is influenced by the performances throughout the afternoon.

Patrick Corvington, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, will give the 2011 Commencement Address on Sunday, May 15. The Corporation engages more than five million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's United We Serve initiative.

Check it out! Reel Big Fish are playing the Hobart Quad on Saturday April 30th! And HWS's own The Scope is opening!

Reel Big Fish is an alternative rock band from Huntington Beach, Calif., whose members have been performing together for more than 15 years. The group is well known for its 1997 hit single Sell Out. Its album Turn the Radio Off, which hosted the single, was certified gold that year and lasted 32 weeks on the Billboard charts. Reel Big Fish has released seven complete studio albums. The band's latest album, "A Best of Us for the Rest of Us," was released in January of 2010. CAB organizers expect the band to play many of their hit songs, old and new, while on campus.

"The Scope" comprised of Hobart students, Andrew Tarnas-Raskan '11, Sarik Kumar '11 and Andrew Mahoney '11.

Our experiment with airing The Takeaway with John Hockenberry and Celeste Headlee has been so successful that WHWS will be keeping the show on its airwaves indefinitely! Yay!

New Music This Week: 2/20-26

What a crazy week preparing for midterms....but I must say what a GREAT week for music here at WHWS....

First Up: Modern Skirts "Gramahawk"
A fun and funky band introduces "Gramahawk". The album is full of a range of styles but consists of deep beats with an indie and alternative flare. The guitar/drum combo mixed in with airy vocals and finally slight synth beats makes for a great listen on a day where "chill" is at the top of the 'To-Do' list.
3.5 Stars--> Check out "Jane Child", "Happy 81" "Glass of Water", and To Be Branch Davidian".

Rollo Greb, "Rollo Greb"
A pretty unknown artist, however do not let that fool you. Pulling from old Blues, Bluegrass, Rock, and deep acoustics mixed in with beautiful lyrcis and vocals=a powerful soul album. Curl up into bed on a rainy day, and spin this. You will not be dissappointed.
3.5 Stars--> Check out "Stay", "Flatland".

Dum Dum Girls, "He MAkes Me High"
Anyone who knows the Dum Dum Girls, know these ladies can rock--and don't apologize for it. In this EP the ladies are back with 60s Rock influences and straight forward lyrics. Long drive? Turn these ladies up.
3.5 Stars--> Check out "Wrong Feels Right", "He Gets Me High".

Headliner: Adele, "21"
Adele has returned for her second studion album "21", and after her first album, "19" was so well recieved, fans have no reason to be dissapointed with "21". Her soulful voice is enough to carry the album, but along with the R&B and 60s inspired beats the album is powerful and a MUST buy.
5 stars--> check out "Rolling in the Deep", "Rumour Has It", "Set Fire to the Rain"...aka the whole Album :)

Holley Maher, "Odd Place to Be"
Just because Ms. Maher is last on this list does not mean anything. Her song bird voice fits the

Join WHWS for a special joint broadcast with our sister station, WEOS 89.7FM, on February 23-24: the 14th Annual Homelessness Marathon - a national broadcast conversation, live from Kansas City, about the problem and problems of homelessness in America, and featuring the voices and stories of homeless people from around the United States

The Homelessness Marathon features live call-ins all night long via a national toll-free number. The hosts on the ground will be Care of Poor People, Inc. and HopeFaith Ministries. We will originate from the HopeFaith site at 705 Virginia Ave. in KC.

WEOS will broadcast the bulk of the Marathon from 7:00pm Feb.23 to 5:00am Feb.24th.
WHWS will broadcast the conclusion from 5:00am to 9:00am Feb.24th.

Tracks like "Mine is Yours", Finally Begin", and "Broken Open" are three of all tracks revealing lyrical savvy and intellect.

"Backwards and Forwards", Swoon
Swoon's first debut, their album, is very laid back and full of floating rock pop lyrics with an angsty twist. They remind me of a very young Silversun Pickups, and with work, will probably grow into their sound a little more. However the album is still a good listen!

"Kiss Each Other Clean", Iron and Wine
Full of angsty vocals among funky, chill, Indie beats, "Kiss Each Other Clean" is a great album to sit back and listen to. Simple lyrics full of story telling, it seems that throughtout the whole album Samuel Beam has loads of things to tell us...or is it just a simple Cd to listen to? Hobart @ Elmira Hockey this Saturday

With a win and a tie this weekend over Neumann, Hobart sits in fourth place in the ECAC West but is just a whisker out of the third place berth and the coveted bye.

That makes this weekend's pair of games against first-place Elmira critical to the Statesmen's chances for the playoffs.

Accordingly, WHWS has added extra game coverage for these exciting times! Tune in at 7pm on Friday and Saturday as we provide live play-by-play from the The Cooler in Geneva on Friday and Murray Athletic Center in Elmira/Horseheads on Saturday!

For our inaugural week, we'll be talking with Brian Miller, HWS NCAA Compliance Officer, about the sanctions leveled against Hobart a few weeks ago by the NCAA. We'll also talk about the seven-game hot streak Hobart Basketball is on (5-0 conference, 13-3 overall) and whether Hobart Hockey's strong overall record (12-4-1, including a 5-2 win over #1 SUNY Oswego) can translate into better ECAC success (2-2-0) as their remaining eight games are all against conference opponents.

The award-winning journalist John Hockenberry is coming to Geneva to speak at the HWS President's Forum on Thursday April 7, 2011 at 7:30pm.

With Celeste Headlee, Hockenberry is currently co-host of PRI's The Takeaway, a national morning news show that airs on dozens of stations nationwide. In the past he has been a contributor to The DNA Files and The Infinite Mind as well as correspondent for NBC's Dateline and host of MSNBC's Hockenberry and Edgewise. He is winner of three Peabody Awards, four Emmy Awards, and an Edward R. Murrow Award.

To give you a taste of why this will be one of the biggest speakers to come to Geneva this year, WHWS will be airing The Takeaway every weekday morning from 6am to 10am from now until April 7th!

We will post details of where exactly the Forum will be held and how to get there as we get them.

Rogue Satellite of DOOOOOM!!! (updated)

UPDATE: Monday Dec.20th. The Public Radio Satellite System has announced that they have successfully deactivated Galaxy 15. This means there is no risk of programming disruption anymore.

That's no moon...

Actually this is not a joke. WHWS gets its Radio Bilingue programming via a satellite called Galaxy 16. Its sister satellite, Galaxy 15, lost all control several weeks ago...but it continues transmitting. There is now good reason to believe Galaxy 15 will cross in front of Galaxy 16 over the Christmas weekend...causing Galaxy 16's transmissions to be interrupted twice daily for a few hours at a time.

The good news is that for WHWS, we believe the interruptions will mostly be at times when we're playing music locally instead of programming off the satellite.

But there will be a few times between Friday, Dec.24th to Tuesday, Dec. 28th, when we may have to substitute our regular alt-rock mix of music for the regularly-schedule Radio Bilingue programming.

Sorry for any hassle that may come from this. Between the holidays and the nationwide impact of this "rogue satellite", there's not much alternative.

Winter Break Schedule

As you all know, WHWS is the student-run station of Hobart & William Smith Colleges. Winter break begins on Saturday December 18th with the closing of the dorms. The first day of class for spring semester is Wednesday January 19th and live student DJ's will return to the airwaves soon after that.

During break, Fridays at the Scandling Cafe and the HWS Sportshour are on hiatus since they are student produced.

Over the holidays, WHWS will remain on the air thanks to a dedicated cadre of community volunteer DJ's, a hefty load of live HWS sports coverage, and a tasty selection of music loaded into our computer automation by our Music Directors.

Herons win the Liberty League!

2010 Liberty League Champs!

It was a down-to-the-wire, triple-overtime/shoot-out win, but a win is a win and the William Smith Herons are the Liberty League Women's Soccer Champions, and thus advance to the NCAA D3 playoffs.

The first round will be played at HWS's Cozzens Field. The Herons will play Keuka College on Saturday Nov.13 at 11am. University of Scranton and Plattsburgh play at 1:30pm. Winner of each game plays on Sunday Nov.14 at 1:30pm.

WHWS will carry all three playoff games this weekend LIVE on 105.7FM!

Tune in Friday from 11am to 1pm for Fridays at the Scandling Cafe, and this week we'll be joined by HWS Professor of Education Pat Collins early in the show to talk about The Laramie Project, a compelling docudrama, originally created by Moises Kaufman and the members of Tectonic Theatre Project, based on interviews with the residents of Laramie, Wyoming in the aftermath of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay student at the University of Wyoming. The play chronicles the ways in which the residents of Laramie struggled to come to terms with Shepard’s murder.

The play is a joint production between the HWS Theatre Program and the Geneva Theatre Guild and will take place in the Black Box Theatre at the Geneva Community Center (160 Carter Rd) on the following dates:

Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, November 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 11, 12, 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The William Smith Field Hockey and Soccer teams kick off the Liberty League Playoffs on Wednesday November 3rd!

The top-seeded 13-2 (5-0 conf) Herons Soccer team starts off at home (Cozzens Field) at 2:30pm vs. 10-4 (4-2 conf) Skidmore Thoroughbreds.
Then at 5:00pm the 11-7 (4-3 conf) Herons Field Hockey team goes down the Thruway to Clinton, NY to take on 16-1 (7-0 conf) Hamilton Continentals.
